I'm a former elementary teacher living, gardening, blogging, and writing in Texas. During my teaching career I wrote short stories to aid in teaching, but I never tried to publish. I kept telling myself I would write someday but I didn't have the time. I let daily life get in the way and I think I let that happen because I just didn't know how to go about it or who to talk to for advice. It was easy to procrastinate and dream.
Later, I became a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. The membership in this wonderful organization encouraged me to get started on the path to becoming a published writer. I began to write seriously, attend writing conferences, and joined critique groups. My experience has been amazing.
My advice to young people who have a dream of being a writer is start right now, don't wait for someday and don't let life get in the way. There's always time to write and pursue your dream.
Being an avid reader of mysteries, suspense, and thrillers, I naturally dove into that genre. I found I also really liked writing short stories for adults and joined Sisters in Crime and Short Mystery Fiction Society.
