Writing Romantic Scenes is Tough!

I don't write romance, never found the necessity in my middle grade projects and just a mild flirtation in my young adult projects was easily portrayed. HOWEVER, in tackling my New Adult WIP it's a necessity.

No problem. It'll be a snap.

I dove right in and drowned.

I wrote the scene, rewrote, and quit. I had no idea it would be so difficult. The scenes I'm talking about are the sweet boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-gets-girl kind of thing. This was just the first meeting where I had to show their instant attraction.

How the heck was I going to tackle a whole, slowly blooming romance if I couldn't even write a first meeting?

If an author wants to write a genre then the writer needs to read, read, read the genre. That's the advice I followed when learning to write mystery/suspense and thrillers. I pulled out my kindle.

I downloaded some romances and a friend loaned two from her kindle archives. For the past week I've been reading, studying, and marvelling at the techniques. No wonder there are devotees of the romance genre. One was so great, I forgot to study and became totally involved with the main character.

Will I find it easier to write those scenes? I hope so.

Creating a Hero

I've begun the outline of a New Adult novel and I needed a hero. I put myself back in time trying to figure out what made my heart leap for that special someone. Then I remembered the song that made all of us weak-kneed over. That impossible ideal of the perfect male. Yum. I found this on YouTube and I was transported back in time.

As a devout e-book reader, one of the first things I do each week is search the free kindle books for the day. I was really happy that these were available, but never really thought about why there are so many free ones up for just one day. So when Susan Kaye Quinn posted a great blog article entitled FREE Books: Bane or Boon? , I wanted to be sure and mention it. Head over there for some good information on a well done post.

On a side note, the free books offered to get more readers worked for me. I've discovered some really good authors I had never heard of before and put them on my must read list.

February 1

It's February 1st, the sky is blue, the temperature is in the 60's, no breeze to speak of, and a wonderful day. I know it's not spring but I've got spring fever.
I have a lot of writing to do but I just can't get in the mood to sit at the computer to write the latest chapter.
In order not to feel too guilty, I decided to blog. I hadn't posted since the middle of January and had to write something so not writing because of beautiful weather is as good a subject as any, right?
I know the weather is arriving in extremes around the country. Wherever you are I'm wishing you a beautiful day and a more productive writing one than mine.
